MSC chose to suspend mackerel certifications in 2019 – a new audit is expected later this year

MSC chose in 2019 to suspend their certifications of mackerel based on previous information about low stock of mackerel by researchers. Since the report’s results were subsequently adjusted and now show a significantly higher stock, there were expectations in parts of the industry that the suspension would be lifted – however, MSC chose not to do so, which is why there still cannot be produced under the MSC label. This means that our recent raw material reception of mackerel, caught in autumn 2019/winter 2020, does not bear the MSC mark. With this said, Saeby Fish Canners Ltd. has continued to focus on fishing and producing sustainably.
